Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)

Qualification Overview

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.

Building relates to construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather and site location.

Occupational titles depending on packaging options selected may include:

• Builder
• Construction Supervisor
• Site Manager
• Site Supervisor
• Leading Hand

The qualification is designed to enable two specialised occupational outcome pathways depending on elective options which will be reflected as:

• Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or
• Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Site Management)

Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.

Builder and Site Supervisor licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.

Who can Enrol?

The target group for this qualification includes individuals aged 18 years and over who are seeking to work in, or progress to, supervisory and management roles within the residential and commercial construction industry. This includes roles such as builder, construction supervisor, site manager, site supervisor, and leading hand.

Pathways into the qualification

Individuals may enter CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) with limited or no vocational experience and without a lower-level qualification.

Recommended Pathways from the qualification

After achieving the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building), individuals could progress to Certificate IV or Diploma Qualifications in Building or Civil Construction.

Employment Pathways from the Qualification

This qualification prepares students to enter residential and commercial construction industry occupations such as:

Academic Requirement
No prior academic requirements apply for this qualification; however, Glen Institute requires successful completion of Australian Equivalent Year 12 qualification or higher.

Age Requirement
All applicants must be aged 18 years or over at the time of applying for admission to the course.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy Requirement
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their LLN Proficiency and Digital Literacy capabilities &/or complete an LLN and Digital literacy test prior to the commencement of the course as per the Glen Institute Pre-training & LLN and Digital Literacy Policy & Procedure. Glen Institute uses the platforms of LLN Robot and Jotform for LLN Proficiency and Digital Literacy test respectively.

Course Specific Requirements

• The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety steel boots, high vest, gloves, and hard hat is mandatory during site visits. Details regarding PPE requirements will be provided during Orientation. Students are responsible for obtaining and wearing the required gear.

Applicants should have basic computer and MS Office skills (Word, Excel and Power Point). Applicants should be in possession of their personal computer (the minimum configuration should be Intel Core i3 (sixth generation or newer) or equivalent. Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional x64, Memory: 4 GB RAM, Storage: 120 GB internal storage).
